DIRECTIONS TO LUDWIG'S CORNER

The horse show grounds are located just beyond the intersection of Routes 100 & 401,

In the heart of northern Chester County, about one hour from Philadelphia, Wilmington

and Elkton.

 

FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE EXIT 312 (old exit 23):

Take Route 100 North for approximately 4 miles, cross Route 401.

Show grounds are 0.3 miles further North on the left.

 

FROM ROUTE 30 (Lancaster Ave.):

Take Route 30 to Route 100 North (at Exton) to the show grounds.

 

FROM ROUTE 202:

Take Route 401 West (from Frazer exit) to Route 100.  Turn right onto Route 100 North.

Show grounds are 0.3 miles further North on the left.

HIGH SCORE AWARDS

American Morgan Horse Association

AMHA High Score Morgan Award 

Awarded to the Morgan acquiring the most points at BCDS.  Horses must be shown under the registered name. Registration papers must accompany the entry form. Point classes include:  division classes, dressage, Ladies or Gentlemen to drive, Ride and Drive.

 

Arabian Horse Association

Region 15 High Score Arabian/HA/AA Award

Awarded to the Arabian/Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian acquiring the most points at BCDS.  Horses must be shown under the registered name. Registration papers must accompany the entry form. Point classes include:  division classes, dressage, Ladies or Gentlemen to drive, Ride and Drive.

 

Brandywine Valley Driving Club Memorial Trophy

High Score Junior Driver Award

Awarded to the Junior Driver acquiring the most points at BCDS. Juniors must show in Junior Driver division. Point classes include:  division classes,  Ladies or Gentlemen to drive, Ride and Drive.

 

Brandywine Valley Driving Club Perpetual Trophy

Grand Champion

Awarded to the entry acquiring the most points at BCDS.  Point classes include:  division classes,  Ladies or Gentlemen to drive, and most advanced dressage score (e.g. if showing both tests, preliminary will count).

 

Regency High-Score VSE Award

Awarded to the VSE acquiring the most points at BCDS. 

 

  1. ADS Rules:  The Brandywine Carriage Driving Show is run in accordance with the rules and regulations of the American Driving Society.  It is, therefore, the competitor’s responsibility to know the ADS rules and regulations of the Pleasure Driving Show.  A copy of the rules is available on ADS website. ADS members must provide their ADS # with their entry.  Non-ADS members will be assessed a $30 non-member fee that can be credited against a full membership.

  2. Vehicles: Wire Wheels and vehicles with pneumatic tires are allowed in Novice & VSE classes only.  Marathon Vehicles are allowed in all classes except Concours d’ Elegance.  Management allows change of vehicle while still competing for championship under a new number.  Any entry deemed unsafe by Show Management, TD, or Judge will not be permitted to compete.

  3. Horse Eligibility:  Horse must be at least 3 years old.  Animals 14.2h and under will be shown as ponies with the exception of registered Arabians, Morgans, Saddlebreds, and Quarter Horses which may show in the horse division at owner’s discretion but may not cross enter.  Junior and Novice drivers may not drive Stallions.

  4. Schooling areas will be clearly marked.

  5. Bridles and or reins removed from saddle terrets or detached before unhitching anywhere on the grounds will result in instant elimination.

  6. Grooms/Passengers:  Four-in-hand  and Unicorns are required to have 2 grooms or passengers on the vehicle.  Pairs and Tandems are required to carry 1 groom or passenger.  A groom/passenger is optional for single turnouts.

  7. Class Size:  3 entries constitute a class.  Management reserves the right to combine or cancel any class.

  8. Novice Classes:  are open to any whip who has not won 3 first place ribbons in approved driving competitions.

  9. Dress/Harness:  Drivers and passengers should be dressed according to the style of their vehicle.  No “period” costumes.  Driving aprons, hats, gloves and driving whip are required in all classes.  Spares are required.  Martingales and overchecks are prohibited except where permitted under ADS rules. 

  10. Dogs must be kept on leashes, at all times.  No exceptions.

  11. All participants: drivers, grooms, helpers, guests will be required to sign a BVDC & ADS waiver of liability form.

General Rules and Information

  1. Pre-entries must be postmarked no later than  May 22, 2008.  Pre-entries close May 22, 2008.  All entries must include ADS entry blank, payment in full, and copy of current negative Coggins test (dated within the past 12 months).  No refund after closing date.

          To be considered for high score awards Morgans and Arabian/HA/AA entries must show

          under registered name and include copy of registration papers.

  1. Entry Fee: $15 per class Post Entry: $20 per class Pre Entry add’l class:  $15 Entry Refund Policy: Refund minus $10 office fee for written cancellation with vet to Physician note received by secretary by 5/22/08.  Refund Policy: no refund after closing date.                                      

  2. **Stabling:  Limited upon request off the grounds. Fee $50- per stall  Please make your request to the secretary

  3. Exhibitors’ & Sponsors’ Post-Competition Party & Awards Ceremony:  After last class at the Sponsors Tent, Please include the number of guests on the entry form, Show competitor & 2 guests attend for free, each additional guest is $5.00.

  4. TIME SCHEDULE:  Sunday starting at 8:30 A.M. Cones may be walked Saturday evening after 1 P.M./ Sunday before 9 A.M.

  5. Participation:  All drivers are welcome.  No driver and/or horse may compete over any obstacle course more then once. (Chp. 11 Article 23 ADS Rules)  A separate entry is required for each horse and driver combination.

  6.  Any person riding on a vehicle must sign a release.
  7. Awards: Trophy and six ribbons in all classes except Concours d’ Elegance where there will be ten places awarded.

    Division awards:  Novice Driver Single Pony, Single Horse, Multiples, VSE Open/Novice, Junior Driver

    Champion classes are:  Working, Reinsmanship, Timed Obstacles and Scurry. All are required for eligibility for Championship.  Reinsmanship will decide ties.

    Points: 1st = 7pts., 2nd = 5pts.,  3rd = 4pts., 4th = 3pts., 5th = 2pts., and 6th = 1pt.

  8. Course:  Obstacles course maps, order of go, time, schedule and other pertinent information will be posted at the Show Secretary’s office and/or will be placed in exhibitor’s packet. Packets will be available from 1 to 5pm Saturday & 7 AM Sunday.
     

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Working (ADS Article 36)

To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot and Strong trot.  May be asked to rein back and execute a figure eight or an appropriate test.  To be judged primarily on the suitability of the horse to provide a pleasant drive.  70% on performance, manners and way of going of the horse(s).  20% on the condition and fit of harness and vehicle, 10% on neatness of attire.

Reinsmanship (ADS Article 37)

To be shown both ways of the ring.  75% on handling of the reins and whip, control, posture, and overall appearance of the driver.  25% on the condition of harness and vehicle and neatness of attire.  

Drive and Ride (ADS Article 40)

In harness, to be put to a suitable pleasure driving vehicle, both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. To stand quietly and rein back.  Horse/Pony to be unharnessed and under saddle go both ways of the ring at walk, trot and canter.  To stand quietly and rein back.  Riders must wear a hard hat/or appropriate hat.  Rider may be different that the driver.  Up to two assistants may help in unharnessing and saddling (saddles may be carried in by assistant). To be judged on manner, performance, and way of going, 50% in harness and 50% under saddle.

Concours d’Elegance  (ADS Article 43)

Concours d’ elegance will be awarded 1st to 10th place. The winner will be the turnout that represents the most elegance overall impression.  Performance not to be judged unless it detracts from elegance of the turnout.

Carriage Dog Class (ADS Article 44)

Judged primarily on suitability of the dog.  Shown both ways in the ring at a walk, slow trot, and working trot. The dog may stand or sit, run behind, beside or at axle of the carriage, but under control at all times.  Dogs may not be restrained/tied to carriage or driver. Driver my not hold or be interrupted by dog.  Dog may be any breed. To be judged 60% on the dog, 30% performance, manners and way of going of horse(s), 10% on overall impression of turnout, including dog.

Timed Obstacle  (ADS Article 58)

After passing the starting line, the driver shall proceed through each obstacle in order to the designated finish line.  Course faults are assessed as penalty seconds and are added to the driver's elapsed time.  Placings are determined on a low total time basis.  Ties for first will be decided by a drive-off.  See ADS rule for more detail.

Scurry (ADS Article 58A)

Open to Singles and Pairs, Driver and Horses age added together must not be less than 50.   Judged on Suitability.

Jack Benny (Non-ADS)

Open to Singles and Pairs, Driver and Horses age added together must not be less than 50.   Judged on Suitability.

Costume Class (Non-ADS)

Open to all.   Judged on originality and suitability of costume and manners of the horse(s).

Division Descriptions:                                                                                                          

Marathon Style Vehicle for Single and Multiples entries being driven to vehicle commonly used for Combined Driving Marathons.  Should be presented clean and tidy as if for presentation.  Hats, Gloves and Aprons are required.

Single Horse:  Horses 14.2h and over and at least 3 years old

Single Pony:  Ponies over 39” and under 14.2h and at least 3 years old

Novice Driver: Driver who has not won 3 first place ribbons in approved driving show.

Junior Driver: Driver must not have reached their 18th birthday as of December 1, 2007.  Any junior under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a knowledgeable adult. All juniors must wear a helmet whenever on a carriage or mounted.

Multiples:  For Pairs, Tandems, or Four-in hands and at least 3 years old

VSE (Very Small Equines):  Single, Pairs and Four-in-hands not over 39” and at least 3 years old.
